Can't watch my stream-captured videos?

I am trying to record a streaming tv program from my digitalbox (dreambox).

Everything works fine during the capturing, I can open the .cap file and watch it with VLC during the progress.
At the end of the tv show, I stop the download and the file saves. Something hapens that makes the file unable to view in VLC or Win media player, just like it saves into a unknow codec or something. I have tried every video convert option, "Nothing - leave as is", "Video - MP4", Video - Windos Media". But the file always is saved as .mp3 ?? :S

Can someone please tell me what to do? To be able to watch the video after being saved?
