Default Set & leave it alone?

I probably already know the answer, but -
When I set the Video capture, what ever is inside the markers is going to get recorded yes? So then I can't do other tasks like e-mail as I may record an e-mail within the video?

Would I be better off reducing the size of the window or movie then say split the screen, open my email- so one half of the desktop is the video and the other half something else and then set up the markers?

In fact, would using a smaller screen to start off with give me a better image recording then using the full size screen of my monitor?
