Freecorder issue. I need help converting avi to mp4 videos.

Im trying to convert from avi to mp4 for my iphone,using freecorder 4.it starts the conversion process then after a while it says the converter tool has stopped working,and doesnt find a solution.i tried converting a youtube clip i had watched to see if it worked and it did?im on windows vista.any ideas why the recorded clip worked ok but the avi movies i have didnt?
