Can not record from Mic.

When I start (open) RM I get this message: -
Unable to set recording device for external recording. Please check your audio mixer settings.

This affects the recording from the Mic. in the following ways
1) Recording stops and starts
2) Cant control the recording level.

The sound card is SoundMAX Intergrated digital HD audio; Driver provider - AnalogDevices; Driver version - 5.10.1.5740; Driver date - 07/02/2008.

I am using HP netbook HP2133. Is someone experiencing similar problems? Is there a fix for this problem or sound card?

What version of windows are you using? Have you enabled your mic in your control panel?

This question does not seem to have been resolved. Hopefully it's still an active thread.
I wanted to use the mic input on a laptop running XP, SP3. The source is an amp speaker output.
In control panel, the only sound recording options are SoundMAX Digital Audio and Bluetooth Audio.
How do you enable the mic? Is additional software required?
