Unable to play automatically converted files(mpeg4/WMV)

I now seem to be unable to play my downloads in WMP where previously had no problems.
Error message says can't play file may not be supported codec etc.
I am usinf most recent RMC4. I have not made any changes to my pc other than normal windows automatic updates.

Interestingly, when I capture the related flv file using a website, I can then use RMC4 to convert with no problem.

I suspect that I have changed a setting somewhere but I can't find it

Can anyone help ?

Where are you downloading the files from that you are trying to play in WMP?
