Default playing recording from freecoder

I have freecorder recording on my laptop, but now when I play it back and i plug in my headset, nothing changes. My headset in not active. I can see it in the sound when I look at the playback but it has a down arrrow next to it. I can not get anwhere to reconnect it or make it active. so I can use my external speaker either. This is all on a toshiba A135-s4727 pc. very limited sound function. I downloaded vista service pack 1 last week. My computer went crazy. I knew is was something with the sound card though. My son got it up and going, but he had to get some microsoft sound driver instead of the realtek I should have. I disable the sound today and tried download the correct drivers from toshiba but got error message installing. Not sure what a I can do. I would like to hook up my exteral speakers.
