Converting iTunes m4p files to mp3

I have not been able to converting iTunes m4p files to mp3 with Replay Converter. Any hints?

There is some kind of broad-based problem with conversions, even using the beta 3.0 version of Replay Converter. For me it only started around the last week of May. Before that it was flawless. My theory is that some kind of update in Windows or another program is causing some kind of interference. If you are patient enough to just keep trying with Replay Converter it will eventually work. Start the conversion and watch the target folder. If the target file does not appear within about 30 seconds it's never going to appear. You should just cancel and try again. I've sort of convinced myself that shutting Replay A/V down before starting the conversion increases the chances of success.

The Applian dev team is actively working on this problem.

I am wondering if it might be either AntiVirus definitions or firewall examining the ffmpeg.exe executable causing the program to stall or appears as stalled. I have found four different versions of ffmpeg.exe, and one version is considered as malicious software.

Yes, AVG version 8 is at the top of my list of suspects because I recently upgraded it. But Applian Tech Support has told me that they run on just a such a system without a problem. But maybe they've told AVG to leave that file alone.

When I first upgraded AVG it complained about one of the two versions of MP3 Magic I run being infected by a Trojan. I told AVG to shut up and go away on that one because I had been using it for well over a year. So, maybe it's just a matter of telling AVG to trust me. But I don't know which file it may be alerting on.

But if this is an AVG-created problem, why does it sometimes work?

I could replicate the error on a Vista 64 box every day. Using Agnitum Outpost Security Suite which was causing me fits! I switched to ESET Smart Security, and my ffmpeg.exe issues went away.

If you are running Vista, open task manager then open process monitor then launch Replay converter then start the conversion process. The entire 6gb of memory was eaten and the dual core CPU jumped to 50% and climbed from there...

If you caught the first ffmpeg.exe is not responding and pressed close, it would complete converting process and everything worked. You have to catch the error as soon as it appears.

Try to exclude ffmpeg.exe from your AV program, and see if this helps.



How to exclude some directory from AVG Resident Shield scanning

If you need to exclude a certain "Potentially unwanted program" from any detection by AVG (for example if you are using an Ad-sponsored program or utility, which could be dangerous, but could also be used with your knowledge), you can exclude it from AVG Resident Shield and AVG tests detection this way:



Please open the AVG program -> "Tools" menu -> "Advanced settings" -> "PUP exceptions" -> push the "Add exception" button to add a new exception.
Now find the file you want to except from AVG detection. If you are not sure that the file location is static, enable "Any location - do not use full path" function.
Save the setting using the "Add" button.


These exceptions can be used for "Potentially unwanted programs" only. If you set the exception for a viral file (Trojan horse, I-Worm, Worm, W32...), this file will be still detected by AVG tests and the AVG Resident Shield.

These exceptions are not used for the AVG Email Scanner.

Note: These exceptions can be created for files only, not for folders.

The file is: ffmpeg.exe

Works sometimes and sometime not; and my guess is that it would be system load or AV resources being used.

Has anyone found a solution to the problem of converting m4p to mp3 files? I rebooted and retried each mp3 format and was unable to convert.

An m4p file is a protected m4a file. Replay Converter can not convert protected files. You will need to find a way to first convert it to a m4a file and then Replay Converter can convert it to mp3.
