should I hardwire headphone out to line in on macbook pro

Video capture works, but only picks up built in mic. This causes bad sound and unsynced audio/video. I am using older macbook pro with vmware windows xp process running video capture. I am contemplating connecting the headphone out to the line in to see if that will work, but don't want to blow anything out. Thoughts anyone?
