I try to install ATBSetup.exe
it gets all the way to the end and then says:
"Can't install because there is another ASK toolbar installed on your system"
NOTE - IT may not be called ASK...

Please go to Control Panel/Remove Programs and remove it."

I have no other toolbars on my computer.
And would it have been tooooo much to ask that programmer to have included a hint or two in his output? I mean if the program notices something that it deems a toolbar, CAN I KNOW WHAT IT IS TOO????

sheesh.
please, if possible, help.

What add-ons do you have installed? What browser version are you using? The toolbar is built by Ask. Ask has the limitation of only one Ask affiliated toolbar/add-on installed.

Running Windows 7 32 bit and IE8 I had the same problem. After uninstalling and reinstalling the Ask toolbar, it installed with no error message. But I do not have the toolbar on IE8 (and no possibility to select it), but running the AARRecord EXE file as a workaround does allow recordings.

I spent 2 days fussing with this issue. Sent a tech support request to Appllan and got a quick reply.

The issue is that the "Ask" toolbar is a separate seach add-on to Internet Explorer that is used by other vendors. If any other vendor using the "Ask" toolbar has their version installed on your Internet Explorer, the Ask & Record will not install and will give you the frustrating error message. The problem is that you cannot tell if a toolbar add-on uses the "Ask" engine just by the name.

In my case, I use the free version of ZoneAlarm as my firewall and it had installed a button on IExplore to activate a ZoneAlarm Anit-Virus package, (which is useless as I don't have in my free version). When I turned that Zone Alarm option off, uninstalled Ask & Record, restarted the computer, then re-installed Ask & Record it finally installed the Ask & Record toolbar. Nothing in Zone-Alarm indicated that they used the "Ask" program so there was no way to tell that this was the problem until Applian tech support suggested it.

So, if you are having this problem, check and see what other toolbars are already on your Internet Explorer.
Then go to http://www.applian.com/asktoolbar/support/index.php
and hit the button "Create Ask & Record Toolbar Support Request".
Fill in the tech support window saying you can't install the A&R toolbar and give them a list of what other toobars are in your Internet Explorer. They will respond telling you which one(s) already include the "Ask" program and need to be uninstalled.

I requested that Applian provide a list of potential conflicting toolbars as part of their error message. They said there are too many that imbed "Ask" in their toolbars to list.

Good Luck!
