I've recorded audio and video tons of times before using the ask toolbar and it worked beautifully, but I haven't used itin a few weeks and today opened it up to record something and all the record buttons don't show up, only the search option. I figured I would uninstall it and install it again maybe that would fix it. but no, now all I have is lots of buttons on the tool bar like "images" "weather" "maps" etc but no buttons to record anything. what is going on? it worked perfect before?

bman4, if the toolbar does not show up have you tried, View - Toolbars - and checking that the relevant box it ticked? Hope this helps.

the toolbar shows up fine, but there's no buttons for recording anymore, just the ones I said and search stuff. it's no big deal I can just open up internet explorer if I want to download a video I guess because it works on there but I always use firefox so it's kind of a hassle.

I know your problem needs fixing, bman4, but I presume you've seen the workround that you can create yourself shortcuts to access the programs directly. This way you can get what you want done while they work on a solution.
Seems like the Applian guys look after the recording software (it works) and the Ask guys look after the toolbar (it doesn't work... well, at least for a significant number of Firefox users). Apparently the Ask guys are working on a toolbar software update which should/may be ready in a few weeks.
My symptom is similar to yours but not identical. Mine works fine in IE, the buttons & toolbar are there in Firefox but don't do anything.
