When I install, this message appears:
The Applian toolbar could not be installed at this time because we’ve detected that you already have a toolbar powered by Ask.com residing on your computer.Click the Exit button for more information.
And this link opens up in my browser when I click exit: http://applian.com/asktoolbar/ask_toolbar_already_installed.php?tb=

Following the instruction on that page, I go to the "uninstall" page on Control Panel, but I can't find any other Ask toolbar installed.

Here is a picture showing what I have installed:

I see part of the toolbar is still installed. It is on your list - Ask & Record Toolbar 4.01. Uninstall that and reboot, then try reinstalling.

I uninstalled it, rebooted, and reinstalled it but I still get the same message.

I uninstalled Ask & Record toolbar 4.01 in Controlpanel, but there still remained a line Ask & Record toolbar, just the name,no data. That cannot be uninstalled? Anyways I been through Windows registers and haven't find any trace of it but still I get the message that I cannot install Ask & Rcord toolbar because I have it. The situation I havent got the the toolbar anywhere I can use it and I can't even reinstall it, so never you mind? I use Windows Vista Ultimate and IE 8.

After about an hour in Windows registry, deleting all keyes mentioning "Ask toolbar" and "Super toolbar FF" I managed reinstalling Ask & Record-toolbar. I still don't think it is a very good practise to create a log file=Ask & Record Toolbar Setup Log.txt in C:\ .

Have you tried using the system restore? (assuming it's in vista) to goto a time before it was installed and reinstall again. Sometimes junk (webjunk or whatever) corrupts over time, and we don't even see it happen.
I admit I am new here but not to the tech and support industry.

Click the Exit button for more information.

I have followed the link "http://applian.com/asktoolbar/ask_toolbar_already_installed.php?tb=" steps.

The Applian toolbar could not be installed, I see the space at the top of IE8 if it is activated in 'view' tab.

We have seen this problem with the latest browser versions. We are awaiting a new toolbar build from Ask that will fix this. They have told us to expect this new build sometime in November.

Various problems with the Ask&Record Toolbar seem to have been outstanding for *months* now, including mine (seen by lots of others) where the toolbar just doesn't work after the first button depress.

I'm led to the conclusion that the Ask&Record Toolbar software and support of it (by Ask) is a complete crock whereas the recording software (supported by Applian) works just fine.

(I don't expect Tasha or any of the other Applian guys to comment on this!)

To be quite frank I could care less about the Ask tool bar! But it appears that the recording software by Applian will not install if the Ask toolbar doesn't install. Any way to install the Applian recording sw with or without the Ask toolbar would be greatly appreciated.

I implemented all of the solutions mentioned on this forum and none of them worked on my system.

Today I will abandon the Applian sw and switch to Firefox with "Video DownloadHelper" it has great reviews (5 stars) from over 2,000 users and has over 48,781,900 downloads, and its free.

I always give a company a chance to response on their forum before posting my experiences with their product on other popular review sites.

You can install Replay Media Catcher. Like Ask & Recorder Toolbar, it can save videos from browser cache, record audio from sound card,...

Thanks for the suggestion but there are too many zero cost options available. I thought Ask and Record Toolbar was one of them because they must have some type of revenue share with Ask.com on the search revenue to cover the cost of developing the Recording sw, but alas it was not meant to be, so I will move on.

Thanks again

Media Catcher does all of that in demo mode - so, zero cost.

Hi there, SoCalGuy,

You've written almost exactly what I was going to write. I also like the applian record programme, but have just given up and gone back to FF Download Helper. Here's my summary: I installed the new version of ASK Toolbar ( 4.01 ) hoping it would cure the old problem of non-operational toolbar buttons after the first button had been pressed, however, it didn't so I uninstalled and re-installed it. This time I got only the Search buttons on the toolbar Namely: Images, Maps, etc. No Record or Save buttons at all. I uninstalled it using Revo uninstaller and ran Regseeker to remove the swag of Registry entries left behind. I downloaded the programme again from the Applian Website and this time I got the "Can't Install Ask Toolbar" message. Sure enough ASK Toolbar 4.01 was back in Program Files again. I repeated the above with the same result. I give up. The installer seems to be installing only the applian software and ignoring the rest. I've actually sent a similar letter to this one to applian.

This has been a frustrating experience for all of us. We hope to have a solution for these installation issues very soon!

Hi Tasha,

As I've seen you write in other places in this forum and is clearly stated on the product page:

"This demo is fully functional and will allow you to capture 100% of all YouTube videos, BUT ONLY 75% of Everything Else"

So it really doesn't do everything that Firefox with "Video DownloadHelper" does (or what Ask & Record was designed to do) and therefore doesn't meet the criteria that I mentioned previously...right?

If you check out the latest update to the program you will see that Media Catcher has everything that the Ask & Record Toolbar has. There is a video history option which allows you to save any video that you have viewed which is streamed in HTTP protocol. It also has an audio recorder and a converter. All of these options are fully functional in demo mode. The stream capture aspect of the program is the only component that is limited in demo mode. So I would say it actually does more than video download helper. Why don't you install the latest version (http://applian.com/download-videos/) and check it out for yourself.

The stream capture aspect of the program is the only component that is limited in demo mode.

That's exactly my point! For this discussion "Stream Capture" is the ONLY important feature and the product you recommended doesn't provide that for free like others services that work and ARE Free.

Best Regards

I think you are missing something within my posts. The Media Catcher Video History option is no different then what Video DownloadHelper does. It lists all of the videos that you have watched - streamed in HTTP protocol - and gives you the option to save them. It is the same component that is in the Ask Toolbar. Better then downloadhelper because it has more options. If you still don't understand, please download the latest version of Media Catcher and check it out. You really can't say what Media Catcher can or can't do until you use the program.
